THE Land Rover Owners Club of Malaysia (LROM) recently organised an off-road clinic in Tanjung Malim for its members to learn more about off-roading.

The off-road clinic was held over two days from June 7 to 8. Participants brought along their own food, camping gear and recovery equipment.

Participation for LROM members was free with non-members paying RM100.

The participants were taught and shown the safe methods of vehicle recovery, winching, identifying potentially dangerous situations, proper usage of a chainsaw, cutting tools and bamboo cutting, as well as waste management.

Three LROM founding members and president Edward Tong conducted the clinic. One of the three founders, CBT editor Yamin Vong, who is LROM’s assistant secretary and club waste management adviser, gave a talk on proper waste management when camping and off-roading.

Another founding member, Rate De Silva, a course master for 4×4 international events and an Xmen 4×4 skipper, together with Edward, touched on cutting tools and bamboo cutting. They were assisted by K. Vigneswaran, a founding member and the club’s technical adviser.
Edward and Rate De Silva prepared the site and special stages (SS). However, due to bad weather, participants could not experience the two SS as they were cancelled for their safety.

This was due to some of the vehicles being not properly equipped for the terrain which had become muddy and slippery due to the continuous rain, as well as the inexperience of some participants.

LROM secretary Alyna Tai said: “The off-road clinic was a good experience for new members as they never had the chance to experience such an off-roading experience before this.”

“The bad weather hindered us from carrying out all the planned programmes and activities for this off-road clinic. However, plans are already in the pipeline for part two of the clinic which will be conducted in the near future,” said Edward.

Some participants brought their children along to share in the joy and experience of off-roading and camping.

Convoy leader and LROM member Rashid Isa brought along his son, Adri Hazim.

“I bring my son whenever I go off-roading because we share a similar passion as he has developed a keen interest in off-roading and camping,” said Rashid.
